The Examination
What is CDS Exam?

Preparation
CDS Preparation Strategy & Common Mistakes
To improve your chances of clearing the UPSC CDS examination on your first attempt, follow a structured and consistent preparation strategy.
01
Build a Strong Score in English
English is one of the most scoring sections of the CDS examination. Focus on strengthening grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, and error detection. Regular practice can significantly improve both speed and accuracy.
02
Strengthen General Knowledge and Current Affairs
The General Knowledge paper requires both conceptual understanding and awareness of current events. Build a strong foundation in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Polity, and Economics, while following important national and international current affairs regularly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring sectional qualifying requirements and focusing only on the overall score.
- Depending heavily on English while neglecting static General Knowledge and current affairs.
- Studying concepts without practising previous-year question papers.
- Attempting mock tests without following the actual examination time limits.
A successful CDS preparation strategy should combine conceptual clarity, regular revision, current affairs awareness, previous-year paper practice, and effective time management.
The Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS) is conducted twice a year by UPSC for graduates seeking entry into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA).
Candidates applying for the Indian Military Academy are generally required to fall within the 19–24 years age range. IMA entry through CDS is for eligible unmarried male candidates. Exact date-of-birth criteria are specified in each UPSC notification.
Candidates for the Officers Training Academy are generally required to be between 19 and 25 years of age. CDS provides OTA entry opportunities for eligible male and female candidates under the applicable eligibility conditions.
Candidates applying for the Air Force Academy are generally required to be between 20 and 24 years of age. The upper age limit may extend to 26 years for eligible candidates holding a valid Commercial Pilot Licence issued by the DGCA.
Candidates must possess a degree from a recognised university or equivalent institution. Final-year degree students may also apply subject to the conditions mentioned in the official notification.
Candidates must meet the medical, physical and visual standards prescribed for their chosen academy and service. These requirements vary between the Army, Navy and Air Force, so candidates should refer to the latest official UPSC and service-specific medical guidelines.
